Blogging... hmm

Blogging is an interesting thing, yet for some reason I not naturally inclined to partake in this activity. This is precisely why I am choosing to give it a go, see where it takes me, and hopefully find out why I am not naturally inclined to do so. If anything, I hope to discover some sort of meaning in it all.

The Science of Music

Here is a piece I completed back in June 2006 for my class entitled "The Science of Music", taught my Stephen Whittington.

It is 'very' loosely based on the growth of a fractal tree or arborescence if you like. There is a further description of the work in the documentation.

I didn't think about it at the time, but listening to it now makes me picture an elder with a broken mind, standing next to a old squeaky metal gate, continually opening and closing it whilst lock in a perpetually inescapable motor loop, with the impossible intent of creating all possible sound variations of the gate opening. The constant tone reminds me of a fly buzzing about, and represents some sort of metaphor for the trance like prison the person has locked themselves in.

The gate itself belongs to some old derelict house. The sky is grey, the garden unkempt, and the floor littered with loose and rotting leaves, the air is cold and the weather is misty. Although there is a scent of freshly discarded autumn leaves, the rotting undergrowth does not allow a completely satisfying smell. Whilst the gate and the surroundings fit into each other as a whole, the elder man belongs to nothing.

This is a program I wrote in 1st semester 2006. I designed it as a teaching aid for myself and as a substitute for a learning partner. Perhaps someone in this world might find it useful...

From memory I think I stopped developing it because I couldn't work out how to output Japanese kana into the message boxes, though I can't say I tried particularly hard. Although I did find it helpful, I found home made flash cards to be equally as useful.

This is the third piece of music that I've composed with LSDJ. Where is the second you ask?

Well I'm still working on it... I wasn't getting anywhere with it and became a little impatient, so I let it be and started working on a third, which I ended up finishing.

After listening to Seb's "crappy riff" I decided to create some crappiness myself.

After 4 hours of learning lsdj and experimenting with many of its features, this is what I came up with... just think of a fleshy skull with a chunk of it's side caved in to a hollow inside with a puddle of green and purple ooze dripping out... well honestly I dont think this really fits the picture of the song, but it's what I happened to be thinking about at the time.

The tutorial I used for this piece was
GameBoy Music Workshop: LSDJ by nullsleep.
Although written for an earlier version of lsdj, it does provide an easy to follow tutorial for the beginners.

Whilst working out how to customise my "Confessions of a Techie" blog, I came across this excellent site on HTML and CSS. It has this great search engine that acts like a dictionary for any HTML tags or CSS properites you might want to know about. I highly recommend it.
